Portalights, Warrington based, fuse high energy, feel-good pop with the atmosphere & sentimentality of an indie-pop-rock soundscape, reverb laden guitars & driving drums notwithstanding. Since forming mid- summer, the band have been busy recording their debut EP ‘Zooplace’, 3 music videos & even supported Gabrielle Aplin @The Ritz, Manchester.
Their debut EP 'Zooplace' is available on iTunes and their currently in the studio working on their next release.
Mobius Loop create gloriously eccentric Gypsy folk stories, fusing world dance music and conscious rap with eruptions of free-form dance, charged with an intimately powerful and intense, energetic live performance. 'Five Fifteen' was recorded by Daniel Squires at Soundskills Studios, Brookfield with Whitelab Records Ltd.
*Mobius Loop are not signed to Whitelab Records Ltd - meerly friends of the studio whom we wish to support.
As a young girl, all that Preston-based singer/songwriter Katie Graham wanted to do was be like Avril Lavigne or Green Day. As she got older, her musical influences expanded to include the likes of Fleetwood Mac, A Day To Remember and City and Colour. A mixture of indie, alternative, pop and rock permeates the Graham sound, but she doesn’t see herself breaking new ground in terms of her sound. The stories that Graham tells with her music sets her apart, much more so than trying to create a new sound or comparing herself to other artists.
The British-Latvian rap artist offers something different from the normal views of our youth culture, using his experiences garnered from his eastern european upbringing and tales of starting a new life in the UK. Mixing the languages of both his native homeland and good-old English he tells stories of life, expectations and ambitions.
That Boy's Secrets
That Boy's Secrets is the brainchild of Alex, a singer-songwriter from Preston. Writing about what he knows, his tunes are a gritty mix of Oasis-style lyrical quips and adult debauchery.
Cess B - Currently working from Canada yet hailing from the Lake District, is a quirky rap artist who utilises humour and a sharp wit to produce catchy, funny and tongue-in-check style lyrics.
A funky house dance act from Preston. Featuring a local vocalist in the form of Erin Rose Harkin, Dub Native's first official release was through Whitelab Records Ltd. A catchy, hook-driven piece heard on the dancefloors of Preston's bar scene.
Aka Titus Charles. Back in 2009 we worked with this rapper and produced his first official E.P. 'Save the World'. Our collaborative track 'Save the World' was picked up by Radio 1 and as a result we were invited to play Leeds & Reading '09 BBC Introducing stage. After an incredible festival 'Boney Black' was the most searched for term through the BBC website, taking precedent over the likes of Radiohead and the Arctic Monkeys...quite the response.
Gentle melodies, softly plucked spanish guitar and rich, velvety vocals...what more could you ask for. Simeone is an extrenely talented singer-songwriter from Preston mirroring the sort of vocal quality found with the likes of Corinne Bailey-Rae and Amy Winehouse. Simeone recorded some material with us back in 2014.
A true gent of folk music. Stephen Radnedge, currently residing in Vimbuch-Bühl, Germany, writes from the heart and soul producing timeless acoustic songs that tell tales about his life from the beauty of nature to long-lost lovers. Always a pleasure to record and watch perform and a popular favourite at folk festivals around the country.
A four piece indie-rock act who visited us in 2007. It was only a very brief recording session and we were using old kit back then, but here is a sample of their work.
The Scamps - Four-piece formed by Lancaster school mates in 2007. One of our earliest recordings in the old studio booths...how we wish we could get them back. The recording quality lets this little gem of an EP down but hey ho...time to move on. Cheeky, angsty and full of witticisms of youth life covering love, loss and future dreams. No longer together, each member is still involved in music in some capacity or another.
An exploration into the mind of a mental health sufferer. Callum describes his personal experiences and anguish at the hands of mental health issues. Often misunderstood, mental health is more prevalant than ever before and excellent work like this goes quite a way to showcase how sufferers of this illness can manage and cope with everyday life by overcoming their individual obstacles with sheer determination and focussed planning. His material is frantic, energetic and often a wall on informative signals...plus he played all the parts on the EP himself.
A local legend! Hazard aka Sean Hobson has been a larger-than-life MC from Brookfield and has been a friend of the label since it's inception. Whilst numerous tracks have been made over the years, many were done quickly and with little time spent on recording...hence the mixtape feel. Still, excellent wordsmith and witty chap who is happy to write about his true life and not that of a wannabe gangster.
Various artists have been in our studio with sometimes just for a single recording, so here is a collection of those tracks.
STATE OF YOUTH PROJECT 2012
In the summer of 2010, Whitelab made a connection with GMMAZ (Greater Manchester Music Action Zone) with a view to running a music project for young people in Preston as a celebration towards the continued good work achieved in the local area. After numerous funding applications and proposed rewrites of what we planned to do, the young people of Brookfield, Preston decided they wanted to write, produce and record their own songs with a view to performing them on stage at a local event. The project was to run for 12 months and we aimed to work with up to 50 young people of Preston, either as single artists or bands/groups.
Across a series of workshops, each artist/s spent time identifying which genre best suited their style, what image they waited to portray through, both, their material and appearance….after all, the music video would be the opportunity to really identify themselves. Weeks of songwriting, studio recording and production, practice and group rehearsals, video filming and photo shoots culminated in the following pieces of material, of which, we are all extremely proud. A big thanks to all the young people who took part, even those who couldn't quite complete their material. You were a pleasure to work with and we hope your hard work and skill levels show through this product of our time together.
After only a few meetings we decided to sign Will to the label. The process was an enjoyable one, mainly due to Will's unwavering trust in myself and Daniel. He basically let us rewrite his entire collection of songs, even allowing us the freedom to remove entire parts or instruments from the arrangement. We focussed the early sessions on his title track "A Fish with no Fins", which allowed us to develop a style and theme for us to replicate throughout the album. Once we were happy with the overall feel of the track, it was much easier to start production of the other tracks, using the title track as a 'sort of guide'. Months of hard work culminated in the release of his debut album to iTunes in early Jan '13.
Roach 'aka' Rory Reneghan worked with us during the State of Youth project and has produced some really interesting material since. With a gritty, unyielding and honest account of youth life in Preston and the impact made by decisions he's taken in the past. Colourful, expressive and absolutely 'Parental Guidance' worthy.
BLKY 'aka' Liam Blake also worked with us during the State of Youth project and has continued to work with us ever since. A talented MC who's take on life is deeper than the average youthful commentary on gang violence, girls and drugs. His viewpoints may not be shared by many but his delivery will keep you asking for more.
THE EMPIRE POLICE
They sound like an English version of The Strokes, who've been described as the 'epitome of Indie' - TuneBird Press
Top lads, top outfit. Their debut release 'Out of Nowhere' was partly recorded with us in the winter of 2016 (Just By Chance and TheFinal Crusade).
Relative newcomers to the live scene, they haven't taken long to establish themselves generating interest and excitement around their arrival. Reserved personalities offer a limited bio poking fun at the lack of a 'witty' text in their profiles...which is good. It means they want to let their music do the talking...just what we like to see.
We hope to see them again in the future to work on further projects.
Available at all good online music sellers 'Out of Nowhere' is a must hear.
Vukovar performed live for one of our Bsnug sessions filmed at Soundskills in the autumn 2016. Whilst they are not signed to the label, they were simply too immense to ignore.
Post punk at it's rawest and purest. Incredible stage presence and intensity with tunes that grab you by the proverbial's.
If you get a chance, you must watch them live!

THE PINSTRIPE PIGEON Band
With diligent songwriting, the lyrics lovingly articulate personal experiences while finding humour in political and social despair. Collectively, the band soak up songcraft and live influences from Fleetwood Mac, The Band, The Beatles, Ryan Adams, Motown, Chic, The E Street Band and Paul Simon.
The Pinstripe Pigeon Band were another fantastic band who featured in one of our Bsnug sessions. They are not signed to Whitelab Records but we enjoyed them so much we wanted to feature them on this website.
Prolific pop purveyors well worth checking out!
